Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the West Virginia Department of Tourism's work with the International Dark-Sky Association to capitalize on our state's unique stargazing opportunities. Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby is right to understand the appeal of getting away from the crowds and out into the kind of outdoor wonderland only West Virginia can offer. "They just want to get away," she said. "One of the most popular activities we have seen is stargazing." With three Dark Sky Parks (there are fewer than 200 with that designation worldwide) and stargazing spots in all 55 counties, it is good to know the folks in Charleston are looking for ways the state can continue to reach for the stars.

UP: To those work release participants who were responsible for cleaning up more than 10 tons of litter in Parkersburg; and to Patrolman 1st Class Todd Lambiotte, who supervises the work. "This program hit the pause button during the height of the pandemic, but the past several months has seen the program reimplemented and those efforts are proving impactful to the gateways into Parkersburg and other areas where litter and detritus are prevalent," Mayor Tom Joyce said. "It has proven highly effective, and the reported volumes collected prove that. The program is doing good things for the city AND for those doing the work. Well done, folks.

UP: To the opening of the new Mary "Mickey" Welch playground at the Parkersburg YMCA. "My mother was a giver," said Mary Anne Ketelsen, president of Mr. Bee's Potato Chips and Welch's daughter. "Her comeback always was, 'I wish I could do more.'" In her name, the children of Parkersburg have been given another opportunity to play safely and enjoy just being kids. What more could we ask?
