Earth Day: It’s our responsibility to protect the environment

Here in Almost Heaven, we know a thing or two about the wonders of the natural world, and the reasons to fiercely protect it. On this Earth Day, it is as important as ever to remember why we cannot let up on the work to support a sustained, healthy environment, even as we know we cannot ignore the people living in that environment.
West Virginia Tourism offers some ideas for celebrating our little corner of the Earth today, such as traveling to the West Virginia State Wildlife Center in French Creek, or taking a walk or bike ride on part of the North Bend Rail Trail. At wvtourism.com there are also ideas for supporting our local honeybees and shopping locally -- Wetzel County's ThistleDew Farm is one example.
On a national level, reminders include walking, biking, carpooling or taking public transportation, rather than commuting by car; recycling; growing food and pollinator-friendly plants; or even an activity in which kids make a bird-feeder. In fact, anything that teaches our kids a little more about our own role in protecting the planet and its inhabitants is a good idea today. That's why a trip to the State Wildlife Center is such a good idea. It provides a good reminder humans are not the only creatures in need of a healthy planet on which to live.
Elected officials, bureaucrats and corporations have a tough task in forging a path forward that transitions our economy while protecting both the planet and working families.
We are fortunate to live in a state where indescribable beauty is often right in our own backyards. On Earth Day we are reminded it is our responsibility to protect not just our home among the hills, but the whole planet as best we can.
