Please Give: Food pantries, other charities still need help

Many organizations across the Mid-Ohio Valley work to feed those who are struggling. The rest of us don't often think about just how many people are in need of such help. The problem may be getting worse, as news from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Parkersburg indicates.
"Good Shepherd Episcopal Church … has recently had a huge increase in the number of homeless individuals requesting food," the church reported. According to their numbers, the church has seen an increasing number of homeless individuals, ballooning from numbers in the teens last spring and summer to 111 in September, 160 in October, 262 in November and 311 in December.
In their case, volunteers with the church jumped into action preparing bags ahead of time. But that isn't easy and it is not free. So they are seeking both monetary and food donations as well as volunteers to help with the effort.
"We know that there are a variety of reasons for homelessness," the church said. "No matter their circumstances, we don't want anyone to be hungry. We hope that with this help, the day will come when they will be able to find (or accept) an opportunity to improve their situation."
Good Shepherd is not alone. Other organizations need help, too, as the number of those who must depend on their resources is growing.
Too many of put away the spirit of giving once the Christmas lights have come down for the season. But the need is as great as it's ever been. If you are able, consider helping Good Shepherd and other similar groups in whatever way you can.
