Giving Back: Boone, Byers are inspirations

We know Mid-Ohio Valley residents are generous sorts, and that a few among us go above and beyond each year to lift up those who need a hand. Last week two such individuals were honored by Philanthropy WV with annual Spirit of Philanthropy awards.

Bob Boone, of the Bernard McDonough Foundation, received the 2021 staff leadership award. The foundation’s statewide grantmaking and collaborative efforts aim to develop systemic, replicable solutions in focus areas such as substance use disorder recovery and support, and helping youth in foster care. Outside the office, Boone also focuses on giving through the Parkersburg Rotary Club, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation investment committee and the Boy Scouts of America.

Reed Byers received the 2021 individual philanthropist award, for his work as a peer recovery coach and volunteering with Friendship Kitchen, the Healthy Kids Running Series and others. He is a peer mentor and has done fundraising work for GiveMore Connections and its How to Save a Life program.

“The Spirit of Philanthropy awards were started 15 years ago to recognize, celebrate and really inspire others to be active philanthropists in our state,” said Paul Daugherty, president and CEO of Philanthropy WV.

You heard him, folks. Boone and Byers should serve as inspiration for all of us to do what we can for each other.

Starting at $2.99/week.
