Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the Vienna Public Library beginning a home delivery service, which is available to library patrons with senior account status and the Vienna zip code 26105. “We are excited to launch this valuable service to help people who might be anxious to leave their homes, or find it difficult to get to the library for curbside pickup,” said Megan Dowler, adult services coordinator. “We will strive to ensure safe, contactless delivery of all library materials.” That is fantastic news for Vienna book-lovers still trying to stay safe.

UP: To the YMCA of Parkersburg and the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, who teamed up to donate supplies for the Birthday Bag Outreach Program that gives birthday party supplies to local families in need. We don’t always think of all the little things families must sacrifice to try to save money. This program is a wonderful way to put a smile on kids’ faces, particularly during this challenging year.

UP: To Fairplains Elementary School teachers Kelsey Johnston and Jennifer Byers, who help their students learn about fractions through a creative cooking project that also got parents involved. “This way, they get to use (fractions) and say ‘Oh, one fourth is smaller than one half,'” said Byers. It’s the kind of out-of-the box teaching that shows our local educators are still finding new ways to do their best for our kids.
