Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
UP: To Lacey Cale at Emerson Elementary School, Edna Ruth Patrick at Madison Elementary School, Deanna Cunningham at Kenna Elementary School in Jackson County and Lori Franks at Tyler Consolidated High School, for being among the recipients of the 2021 STEM-Minded Educator Grants. The awards of up to $1,000 are meant for materials or technology that can be used either in the classroom or in students’ homes. As the coronavirus pandemic has put us on the fast-track for educational adaptability, these teachers have shown they are ready to give our kids the tools they’ll need to live in the world that awaits them.
UP: To Jay Thorn and Tim Woollard, who were honored as the 2020 Firefighter of the Year and Fire Officer of the Year, respectively, by the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. “We believe this pat on the back of these individuals shows how dedicated they are,” said Vienna Fire Chief Steve Scholl. “Both are very deserving individuals.” Thank you, gentlemen, for your service to the community.
UP: To Parkersburg Catholic High School being awarded the College Board Advanced Placement Computer Science Female Diversity Award. “I’m exceedingly proud of our students,” said principal Mary Caren Heffner. “They exceed expectations every time we ask them to meet a level — they exceed them. That’s what our lady Crusaders continue to do, both in the classroom, on the court and on the field. I’m just really proud of them.” As she should be. Congratulations, folks.
