Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the idea of a Parkersburg Police Department internship program, which, if approved by City Council, would create four positions in which candidates could receive training if they have passed the written and agility tests for the department, but might not yet be ready to go to the academy and fully join the department. “We look at this as another tool toward recruiting the best police force we possibly can,” Mayor Tom Joyce said. Should all the details work for council, it sounds as though it will be a good one.

UP: To proposals for a new marina and sports complex along the Ohio River in Ravenswood. Thumbs up, as well, to the idea that the project could be accomplished without affecting residents’ taxes. “This is also a major economic development project that’s going to bring people from hundreds of miles away,” Mayor Josh Miller said. “I’m trying to get all of this funded in one potential big loan with lower interest rates. What I’m trying to do is save money over the long term.” Miller called the project a “game-changer,” and should it be possible to fulfill in a way that matches his vision, it will be.

UP: To Hall Financial Advisors in Marietta, which organized the donation of nearly $13,000 in school supplies for Wood and Washington counties teachers. “My wife spent months taking requests and customizing packs for individual teacher needs,” said Chris Hall managing principal of Hall Financial Advisors. Kudos to Hall Financial and other businesses and organizations that have continued to find ways to meet the needs of the bizarre school year.
