Thomas

Mrs. Carol Cummings Thomas, 77, of Parkersburg, passed away on July 21, 2026, at the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, after an extended illness.

Carol was born in Maysville, Kentucky on July 6, 1949, to the late James J. and Anna Margaret Faris Cummings. Carol graduated from Fleming County High School in Flemingsburg, Kentucky and later graduated from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky with a degree in business education. She would have a long career teaching, which included posts at St. Patrick High School in Maysville, Kentucky and at West Virginia University in Parkersburg for thirty-five years where she retired as a professor.

On August 8, 1970, "with quiet dignity and charming simplicity" she married Roger D. Thomas at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Flemingsburg.

Faithfully, Carol followed her husband where his military career took him and lived in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Wolters, Texas, Fort Rucker, Alabama, and finally to Parkersburg.

In 1994 Carol and her husband Roger journeyed to the former Soviet Union and adopted three children: Jon Misha, Ryan Vova, and Katya Anne.

In her pastime Carol enjoyed reading, quilting, traveling, finding bargains at yard sales, and collecting antiques. She was especially fond of old stone crocks.

To mourn the loss of Carol is her dedicated husband of 55 years, Col. Roger D. Thomas (Ret.); her children Mr. Ryan Thomas of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Katya Thomas Shultz (Allen) of Parkersburg, and grandchildren, Haelyn Thomas, Olivia Shultz, Ivan Shultz, and Layla Shultz. Her sister, Emma Kathleen Miller, and her brother, Tyson James Cummings (Cindy), her sister-in-law, Mrs. Brenda Thomas Byard (John), along with nieces and nephews.

The family will be holding a private gathering for Carol.
