Martha Anne Moran
Moran
On May 5, 2026, at the age of 85, Martha Anne Moran passed away peacefully in her home with her children at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Paul Moran, after 58 years of marriage.
Martha was born on August 14, 1940, to Walter Clayton and Anna Catherine Alkire Neely in Weston, WV. At a very young age, Martha’s strong sense of duty and responsibility allowed her to care for her mother as well as look after her younger brother, Steve Neely, until his passing in 2010. As a young woman, Martha was introduced to Lee Paul, then a young GI returning from service. Soon after being married, they moved to Jackson County.
In Ravenswood, she would dedicate her life to raising her family. She and Lee Paul were faithful lifelong members of the Catholic Church. Martha taught Sunday school for many years and gave generously of her time and tithes to church ministries. Her faith was reflected in a life marked by sacrifice, humility, love, and devoted service to God and her community.
To the many lives that she touched, she was a gentle teacher, a clothes designer, a nurse, and trusted friend. As a gifted seamstress, Martha made wearable fashion, wedding dresses, prom outfits, and clothes for the children’s dolls. She had a passion for proper grammar, spelling, and a love for all things literary. She generously shared that love through tutoring many neighborhood children over the years.
Martha lived, worked and died in WV. She did not value material things but found deep meaning in a life of simplicity. She found joy in her lifelong love of reading – where she was transported to faraway lands and people and gave her intensely curious mind an outlet for exploration. She regarded the Jackson County Library as a very special place.
She is survived by her four children: Michael Paul Moran; Rita (Lance) McCoy; Barbara (Jon) Schade; and Peggy (Pat) Sutton; her dearest sister-in-law, Sue Moran; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was cared for by family, friends, and several fiercely passionate in-home caregivers, medical professionals, and hospice team members. We are deeply indebted to these faithful caregivers who went well beyond their duties and truly became family.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of Martha Anne Moran, to the Jackson County Public Library, 323 Virginia Street, Ravenswood, WV 26164.
