Burl “Don” McVey

Burl “Don” McVey, 84, of Elizabeth, Wirt County, passed away on May 2, 2026, at Elizabeth Care Center in Elizabeth.

He was born on August 6, 1941, in Pee Wee, a son of the late Roy and Edna (Fluharty) McVey.

Don was a veteran of the United States Army, a construction worker, and a lifelong Wirt County farmer. He enjoyed taking family and friends on trips out west, especially to Clovis, New Mexico, and Whitman, Nebraska. He was a member of Center Valley United Methodist Church.

He married the love of his life, Pauline (Giffin) McVey, on June 17, 1961. They shared 64 years of marriage together.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Dean McVey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline McVey; three sons, Gary (Eydie) McVey of Palestine, Roger McVey of Elizabeth, Duane (Lou Ann) McVey of Palestine, and one daughter, Janet (Darrel) Frazier of Newark; nine grandchildren, Joe, Steve, Amber, Krystal, Amanda, Jordan, Dylan, Levi, and Katie; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers, Rev. Roy McVey Jr. of Chapmanville, Rev. Bernard McVey of Sandyville, Rev. Danny McVey of Leroy, and Randy McVey of Leroy; and three sisters, Donna Mae Crouser of Parkersburg, Carol Cooper of Mineral Wells, and Kathy Hooper of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM, at Center Valley United Methodist Church, 888 Fulls Fork Road, Leroy, West Virginia, with Reverend Mark McCloy officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Center Valley United Methodist Church Interment will follow in Center Valley Cemetery.
