Fredrick Larry Koontz

Fredrick Larry Koontz

In the evening hours of February 26, 2026, the heavens opened wide and welcomed home a kind and gentle soul. Fredrick Larry Koontz was born at home in Cottageville, WV on March 19, 1945. He was No. 12 of 13 children born to the late Warren Webster and Pheobe Counts Koontz. He was married to Carol Ann Summerville for 55 years. He grew up on a farm at the foot of Limestone Hill, he attended Gates Ridge United Methodist Church and graduated from Gilmore High School. Fred could build a house, bake a cake, licensed realtor and exterminator, cut firewood, professional tax preparer, write a computer program, repair lawn mowers, completed several college computer language classes, feed his herd of 17-21 deer, and golf, golf, golf. He worked 32 years at the Bureau of Public Debt, retiring in 2000 as a Facility Equipment Officer and he worked at H&R Block for several years. He was a volunteer 4-H leader for 40 years and a WV 4-H All-Star, Master Mason for 52 years at Mount Olive Lodge No.3 and past president of Deerwalk Community Association. Our beloved husband, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor, volunteer, and coworker, has gone before us. Survivors include his wife, one sister Betty Jean Anderson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Rosalie Kerwood, Eloise Sayre, Loretta Full, Janet Faye Hale, and Luann Koontz; brothers, John Wesley, Robert Dorn, Okey Otmer, Teddy Odell, Richard Lee and Floyd Koontz. Thanks to Jimmy for his weekly phone calls, his many trips from Florida to WV and when needed, he would be here in 14 hours. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
