Dr. Michael B. Wilhelm

Dr. Michael B. Wilhelm, of Wilmington, N.C., passed away on February 3, 2026, at the age of 58. He was deeply loved and will be remembered above all as a devoted husband, son, brother, and friend.

Michael most recently served as Chief of Staff at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where his career reflected an unwavering belief in the power of global education to transform lives. He supported university leadership and strategic initiatives with thoughtfulness, integrity, and quiet confidence. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at West Virginia University, where he supported international students and helped establish alumni branches abroad. He was also a 1985 graduate of Parkersburg South High School.

Michael’s warmth, generosity, and steady presence made everyone around him feel seen and valued. While he was a highly respected leader in higher education, his greatest joy came from his family, friendships, and the everyday moments that made life rich. He loved traveling the world, biking, and watching Premier League matches. He was a devoted dog dad to Luca and Nico, who brought him constant companionship and happiness.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Candace (Tackett) Wilhelm; his parents, Brent and Kay Wilhelm; his brother, Kris Wilhelm (BJ Taylor); along with extended family, cherished friends, and colleagues around the world. His legacy lives on in the students he inspired, the global bridges he built, and the kindness and humility with which he led.

Calling hours to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Madeline Suite on the campus of UNC Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Halo Havanese Rescue (rescuedhavanese.org).
