Rev. Carl E. “Butch” Burns

Rev. Carl E. “Butch” Burns

Rev. Carl E. “Butch” Burns, a beacon of faith and a source of boundless love, was called to his heavenly home on December 18, 2025, following a courageous journey through an extended illness. He was born on October 10, 1943, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the son of the late Carl W. and Helen Burns. From his earliest years, Butch’s life was rooted in Christian love and service – values that would define him for a lifetime.

Butch’s educational journey began at Parkersburg High School, where he graduated in 1963. Even in his early years, his warm personality and natural leadership were evident. He continued his education at Vennard College and later at Covington Theological Seminary, where he deepened his love for Scripture and embraced God’s call to pastoral ministry. These years of preparation laid a firm foundation for a life devoted to serving Christ and others.

For many years, Butch faithfully served as a pastor in the Evangelical Methodist Church. His sermons, often marked by both wisdom and humor, touched countless lives. He led not only from the pulpit but by example – demonstrating kindness, compassion, and genuine love for people. A true shepherd, he was always ready with an encouraging word, a listening ear, or a well-timed laugh, making him deeply loved by all who knew him.

Butch’s life reflected his faith, and he embodied the words of Scripture: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” He shared a beautiful love story with his devoted wife, Dolores “Dolly” Rhodes Burns, marked by mutual devotion and a shared commitment to faith and family. Together they created a home filled with love and laughter, raising their sons – Steven (and wife Jennifer), Michael, and Roger (and wife Ann) – along with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom continue his legacy of faith and compassion. He is also survived by two sisters, Janet (Robert) Powell and Judy (Basil) McClung.

Beyond the pulpit, Butch found joy on the golf course, where he delighted in God’s creation and friendly competition. His humor, kindness, and sportsmanship made him a cherished companion on the greens. He also greatly enjoyed sharing sports and activities with his sons, building memories rooted in love and togetherness.

Butch lived as a testament to the power of love, grace, and kindness. He found joy in simple moments and laughter in everyday life. These qualities endeared him to many and made him a beloved husband, father, Papaw, pastor, and friend.

As we reflect on Butch’s life, we are reminded of the words of Billy Graham: “My home is in Heaven. I’m just traveling through this world.” Butch’s journey through this world left a lasting trail of faith, laughter, and love – one that will remain forever etched in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
