Elizabeth Ann Sandy

Elizabeth Ann Sandy

Monday, December 15th, Elizabeth Ann Sandy, 91, of Parkersburg, WV joined her loving husband Arthur Thomas in an everlasting reunion with God in Heaven. She lived in Parkersburg and Williamstown, WV but spent her most recent years near her son and caregiver, Tom, in Mount Pleasant, SC. Betty Ann was born to Mildred Snyder and Samuel David Foor in Morgantown, WV on November 2, 1934, where she was raised and later earned a degree from WVU in Home Economics.

Betty met Arthur (Tom) Sandy on a blind date. They married on December 26, 1955. She converted to Catholicism and remained dedicated to Mass, the rosary and her faith in God. Her talent for sewing, upholstery, decorating and watercolor painting brought beauty to every place she lived.

She was devoted to her family. At the Sandy home, every birthday was thoughtfully tailored for the lucky birthday boy or girl. Christmas was her favorite season. She honored Advent and celebrated the birth of Christ while creating her own family traditions around baking holiday treats, listening to hymns and carols and creating her own Christmas decorations. She was a generous giver who always looked on the bright side of life.

Her friends knew her as a trusted confidante who was ever ready to strategize and laugh over iced tea, her homemade vegetable soup or a game of bridge. Betty was active in church groups, the WV Teacher’s Union, the AAUW and the League of Women Voters. She was an enthusiastic fan of WVU sports.

Teaching became her calling, like her mother before her. She taught at Parkersburg Catholic Elementary and Williamstown Elementary Schools. “Mrs. Sandy” loved utilizing her skills as a communicator, breaking down any subject into steps and drawing a diagram, if necessary. Every Spring, she could be found at Dolly Sods sharing discoveries in that treasured place with her students and fellow teachers. Betty was a lifelong student and stayed curious until the end.

Betty is survived by her 3 children: Tamara, wife of Bob Kreizel, New York, NY; Tom, husband of Krista (Holbrook), Mount Pleasant, SC; and John, of Waynesboro, VA and seven grandchildren: Shane, Marcus, Zack, Morgan, Brittany, Abbey and Joel and thirteen great grandchildren Malachi, Jaden, Dylan, Gracie, Marcus, Kingston, Khloe, Maddox, Russell, Eleanor, Bowen, Bennett and Remi.
