Barbara A. Webb

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara A. Webb of Spencer, WV. On the evening of December 17, 2024, she spent the evening having dinner with family, opening presents and eating cake in celebration of her 90th birthday. Now we must celebrate her birthday without her.

Barabara was born on December 17, 1934, to John C. and Flora (Peters) Dillon Hookersville, Nicholas County, WV and later moved to a farm on Beech in Calhoun County, WV, where she grew up with 1 older brother and 3 sisters. She would often talk about the days of walking several miles to catch the bus to school until her graduation from Calhoun County High School in 1952.

Barbara married Frederick S. Webb of Spencer, WV in 1954 and shortly after started a family with the arrival of their first child, a daughter, Debra L. Hall of Parkersburg, WV. Later on, they welcomed a son, Mark D. Webb (Nancy) of Palestine, WV.

Barbara was employed by the G. C. Murphy Co., and Staats Pharmacy. But the job she spoke about most, was her time employed at O. J. Morrison’s in Spencer, owned by Bill and Fannie Reed. She worked as a store clerk, the alterations dept., and as a buyer for the store. She would tell stories about her trips to New York City and Charlotte, NC. One of her most memorable stories was being in Charlotte and dining at the same place that NASCAR great Richard Petty was at.

Barbara left the workforce in the 80’s to become a stay-at-home grandma and caregiver to her only grandchild, Whitney, while her parents worked. After Whitney started school, Barbara could be found volunteering in classrooms. She would help children who needed a little extra attention, or who had missed school and needed assistance in getting caught up. She also helped raise money for class field trips by popping popcorn for sale after lunch. Not only did she do this for Whitney’s class, but she was also asked by numerous other teachers if she and her popcorn poppin’ partner, Wilma Wilson, would do it for their classrooms as well. Barbara would also help chaperone the class trips. Barbara’s last volunteer project was helping with the Roane County High School’s after-prom in 1997 & 1998.

In her free time, Barbara enjoyed sewing and crafting. She made several of her granddaughters’ Easter dresses, as well as, dresses for ladies in the women’s club. She was a master at crocheting, and leaves behind several beautiful Afghans for her family to snuggle up with. She was also good at making things out of plastic canvas and could also do cross-stitch.

Barbara later rejoined the workforce with a job at ValuMart until their closing. Shortly after Wal-Mart opened, Barbara accepted a position as a door greeter. Barbara spent about 10 years welcoming the residents of Spencer and surrounding towns to Wal-Mart. She retired a few years after the birth of her only great grandchild, Alyssa, born December 1, 2009. She fondly called Alyssa her “little doll baby” because when Alyssa was born, she thought she looked like a little doll baby. Barbara still wasn’t too old to be carrying around a baby or changing diapers. She truly was living her best life at that time.

This time of year, she enjoyed being in the kitchen baking up dozens of chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, sugar cookies, or peanut butter fudge. It was also not uncommon to find her and her sister-in-law, Marilynn, making 100s of peanut butter balls, coconut balls, chocolate covered cherries, 7-layer bars, and whatever other recipe she found that she wanted to try.

However, those who knew her well knew that the time she treasured the most was time spent with her granddaughter, Whitney, and her great granddaughter Alyssa.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Robert C. Dillon, who she was very proud of for being a 2-time purple heart Korean War Veteran. She is also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Rick Hall.

Arrangements are being handled by Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. No services will be held for Barbara. Cards or gifts of sympathy can be mailed to: 7050 State Route 821, Whipple, OH, 45788, please specify who they are for.
