Susan Gaskill Pittenger, 93, of Belpre, Ohio, died at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born April 24, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Charles N.C. and Fernolga Leach Gaskill in Wellston, Ohio. Sue was a graduate of Wellston High School, class of 1950, Gulfpark College, Gulfport, MS, in 1952 and Ohio University in 1954 where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She married Lester A. Pittenger of Wellston, Ohio, in 1955. She worked as a bank Executive Secretary until they started a family. She was an active member of Rockland Methodist Church, the Rebekah Circle, and the Thursday Morning Women's Bible Study. She was the President of the Belpre Women's Club from 1969-70 and participated with this organization for many years.
She made many crocheted afghans for fundraising and church bazaars as well as gifts. She loved to sew, paint, knit, crochet, bake and dance. Many band kids in the 1970's received a handmade gift from her that they still have. She and Les traveled, were in the Tempo Dance Club, were square dancers, and loved to play euchre. Sue was also in several bridge clubs in Belpre. She enjoyed listening to OSU football and Joe Burrow, and the Cincinnati Bengals. She was dedicated to her exercise routine and walked on a treadmill everyday for 30 minutes while listening to music that had a beat.
In 1975, she and Les were in a tragic car accident, and she lost her eyesight. She continued to cook, crochet, knit and volunteer for her church. She made 100s of dozens of chocolate chip cookies that were devoured by her son and grandsons. Family gathering together for fun was important to her, and she enjoyed many cruises, destination vacations, and long weekends with her family. She was proud of her family, a loyal friend, a true follower of Jesus Christ and lived her life as an example of what faith and positivity could do for you. Her good attitude and sunny outlook were an inspiration to all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Leslie Pittenger of Belpre and Bruce Pittenger of Racine, Ohio, grandchildren, Brittany Pittenger, Belpre, Ohio, Broc (Dawn) Pittenger, Ashville, Ohio and Bryce (Lena) Pittenger, Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving is a great grandchild, Jettson Reed Pittenger, Ashville, Ohio, a sister, Barbara Gaskill May, Hillsboro, Ohio, a brother, Charles Ned Gaskill, Leigh Acres, FL and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Pittenger, her parents, an unborn infant son, son-in-law, Jimmy Tyre, brother-in -law, Charles A. May, and a nephew, Chris May.
Services were Monday, November 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre with Pastor Wesley Thoene officiating. Graveside services will be held at the Ridgewood Cemetery, Wellston, Ohio, today at 1:00 PM.
