David “Bunky” Clark Hyre
David “Bunky” Clark Hyre, 70, of Washington, WV, went home to be with his Savior on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at home in his favorite chair while holding his beloved daughter’s hand. After an eight-year, hard-fought battle with MDS contracted from Benzene exposure he is now made whole again and at peace. He was a DuPont retiree.
Born in Parkersburg, WV, the son of the late Richard and Betty Ward Hyre, he was a man of many talents and passions – a skilled hunter, fisherman, competitive shooter and carpenter. In his younger years, he was a boxer, wrestler, and wrestling referee. He enjoyed a good game of poker with his friends, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and never missed an opportunity to fish.
Dave’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren how to box, wrestle, hunt, fish, shoot, work on cars, and tackle projects around the house. He was a constant presence at every sporting event, 4-H show, and piano recital. His love, guidance, and support will be deeply missed and remembered always.
He is survived by his first wife of 28 years, Vickie Hyre, whom he remained best friends with until the end; his beloved daughter Jody Johnson (Tony Burdette); beloved son Aaron Hyre; beloved grandchildren Darin Johnson (Harlie), Ryan Johnson (Meredith Muller), and Braxton Parsons and great-grandchildren Braydon Webb and Sunny Johnson; his sisters Becky Lowe (Mark) and Estelle Fulmer (Pat); brother Donald Hyre (Rosemary); numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his current wife of 18 months, Tonya Hyre; beloved grandchild Mason Ewing; and David’s good friend, Tom Welker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Mike Hyre and infant granddaughter, Megan Hyre.
His children, and their mother, Vickie, would like to thank Strecker Cancer center, especially Christy Ford. They would also like to thank Dr. Yogen Saunthararajah who first diagnosed him after years of not knowing what the cause of his illness was. They also want to convey the sincerest gratitude to the transplant team at Mayo Clinic, hematologist Dr. Al-Kali and transplant physician Dr. Mangaonkar, who were actively looking for a bone marrow donor for his upcoming transplant.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 6:00 PM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, Daniel Golden officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.
