Veda Marie (Cumpston) Carpenter

Veda Marie (Cumpston) Carpenter
January 3, 1941 – August 18, 2025
There are certain souls in this world that shine so brightly and embody so much love that it is near impossible to capture that spirit fully in words, pictures, or memories recounted. Veda was one of those bright, shining souls.
She was raised on a farm in Doddridge County, WV with her 5 siblings, who share a remarkable bond that is often admired and spoken about by those that know them. They were raised to understand hard work and dedication, respect for their peers and community, faith in the Lord and strong Christian values, and devotion to family.
Veda’s devotion spilled over into many areas of her life. There is a quote by Maya Angelou that says “I’m going to make everything around me beautiful, and that will be my life.” That is exactly what Veda did. She turned houses into beautiful homes (including all of the homes she entered throughout her 15 years of selling Home Interior), she curated beautiful gardens, made delicious meals, adorned herself and others in beautiful clothing and jewelry …she truly approached life as art. The love she poured into those around her is the beauty she created, and that will be her legacy.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Burleen Cumpston, father, Reverend Marshall Cumpston, and loving husband of 64 years Aubra “Butch” Carpenter.
Her spirit is carried on by her two children, her son Dave Carpenter and his wife Kellie and daughter Missy Morrison and her husband Ed, her four grandchildren Natasha Kirby, Megan Meeks and husband Chris, Jordan Carpenter, and Jozie Carpenter, three great-grandchildren Paxton, Colt, and Hadlee Meeks, four sisters Nancy Bastin, Janet Michels and her husband Ron, Marsha Gnagey, Debbie Cumpston-Burlas and her husband John, and one brother Rick Cumpston and wife Kendra.
There are many other loving extended family members and friends not mentioned here that surrounded Veda with love and support throughout her life and through her final days. Her community was large, showing her ability to love endlessly.
We would be remiss not to mention the team of caregivers who beautifully showed up for Veda in her last weeks of life – Anita and Barb. You became family. Thank you for loving her like your own.
A special “thank you” to her brother-in-law, Ron Michels, who also played a vital role in her caretaking as she completed her transition to Heaven.
Veda will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be Friday at 1:00pm at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Pastor David Cumpston officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mission Cemetery in Doddridge County. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 pm and Friday from 12-1pm.
