Steven Wade Lewis, 68, of Ellenboro, WV, loving Husband, Dad, and Papaw, departed this life on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Steve was born July 10, 1957 in Marietta, OH, a son of the late Daniel Neal Lewis and Freda Maxine (Mossor) Lewis. He was a proud graduate of Pennsboro High School with the class of 1975 where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football, earning All-State honors in football in 1974. Steve continued his football career at Glenville State College while graduating with his BA in Education and he also played for the Wood County Raiders Semi-Pro football team. Steve continued his education beyond Glenville State by earning a Master’s Degree in Special Education as well as a Master’s Degree in Administration.
Steve’s working career was centered around education and devotion to his community. Prior to teaching, Steve worked as a social worker and counselor for children. He served as a special education teacher at Ritchie County High School as well as Athletic Director at both Ritchie County Middle School and Ritchie County High School for many years. He then served as the Assistant Principal at St. Marys High School and as principal at the former Ellenboro Elementary School. After his retirement from education, Steve worked as a columnist for the Pennsboro News called “Sports News and Views” and as an agent for WV Insurance Company of Harrisville, WV.
Steve’s secondary career was his devotion to his community of Ellenboro, WV. He became mayor of Ellenboro in 1989 and has served the town in that position for 34 years. Prior to becoming mayor, Steve served as a town council member and was a member of the Ellenboro Vol. Fire Dept and founder of the Ellenboro Glass Festival. He was passionate about his town and instrumental in making it what it is today. Steve was currently working on the continued development of the recreation area at the Bill Hinton Memorial Park that he was most proud of.
Steve is survived by his best friend and wife of 45 years, Kimberly Dawn (Henderson) Lewis; his daughter, Carrie Dawn Burwell (Craig) of Ellenboro, WV; his three grandsons, Seth Cronin, Drew Cronin, and Hunter Burwell who were his pride and joy. Steve also leaves behind two sisters, Jackie Hall (Frank) of Harrisville, WV and Kristie Campbell of Ellenboro, WV; mother and father in law, Mabel and Reese Henderson of Pennsboro, WV; sister in laws, Debbie Richards (Bob) of Ellenboro, WV; Kathy McCullough (Don) of Pennsboro, WV, and Tammy Harper (Brent) of Glendale, WV, along with 15 nieces and nephews, many cousins, and his unending list of friends that loved him dearly.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by two sisters, Terry Lewis and Nancy Broce and his grandparents, John and Ruth Lewis and Martin and Rosella Mossor.
Steve and his wife Kim did everything together. They especially enjoyed attending sporting events and were always on the front row of their grandsons’ games and meets. They also enjoyed music and attending concerts. He was a very talented artist and woodworker and people looked forward to seeing his pumpkin carvings each year.
Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the Ellenboro Municipal Center, 100 School Street, Ellenboro, WV, 26346 with Pastor Cody Parman officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellenboro Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4pm-8pm on Friday at the Ellenboro Municipal Center. McCullough Funeral Home in Pennsboro, WV is assisting the family with the arrangements.
