Richard Lynn Cook, 95, of Vienna, was received by his Lord and Savior on June 19, 2025. The only child of Lynn & Sybil Brand Cook, he was born in Fairmont, WV, on Dec. 10, 1929. After spending his early years in nearby Rachel, he moved with his family to the Parkersburg area at the age of 4. There he graduated from PHS and soon after enlisted into the US Navy. Known better as Dick to his friends, he was assigned to the USS Newport News as part of her original crew from 1948 to 1952 and reveled in the service life of a seaman traveling the world. However, he soon met Eva, his love-to-be and that quickly put an end to any naval career. They were married on May 2, 1953. Not long after that they were blessed with a daughter, Diane followed soon after by a son, Rick. It was then that both Dick & Eva decided to give their lives to Jesus and become part of an even larger family. Their home away from home became North End Church of Christ. Dick taught bible classes, went on mission trips, welcomed all, and joked, laughed and swapped stories with anyone who would listen. For 34 years, he served as an elder for the congregation.
After the navy, Dick began work at some of the industrial plants in the area, slowly working his way up. In 1961 he was hired as a shift foreman by (then) Shell Chemical Company at the Belpre start-up location. He remained with Shell until retiring as a Maintenance Supervisor in 1987.
Dick was known and admired for many things by the people in his community. A hunter, an outdoorsman and weekend golfer with a long-ball in search of a fairway, he was always looking for another sportsman. A dedicated student-of-life, co-worker and mentor who sought to learn and to share whether it be scripture or new PSI industrial safety guidelines, he loved to engage on a variety of subjects. A loving and attentive son, he accepted much responsibility at an early age and stayed the course the whole of his parents' lives. And finally, a selfless family man in his own right, who devoted himself to being a better husband and father every single day.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Eva L. Cook, daughter, Diane L. Fouss and son, Richard M. (& Molly) Cook, along with grandchildren Josh Fouss, Jeremy (& Peri) Fouss, Brand (& Mallory) Cook, Jordan (& Amanda) Cook and Michal Lauren Cook (& Shrey Aggarwal). Great grandchildren include Brindley & Lyla Cook, Bowie Cook and Adam & Corinne Fouss.
A special thank-you to the dedicated staff at Wyngate Senior Living for their everyday support for almost 3 years and to the chaplain, nurses and social workers of Amedisys Hospice, who loved on, sang with and cared for Richard the final 2 years of his life.
Funeral services will be held at North End Church of Christ in Parkersburg with support from the Leavitt Funeral Home. Visitation is Thursday, June 26, from 6-8 p.m. with the funeral on Friday, the 27th at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.
