Vernon Eugene Smith, 88, of Washington, WV, passed away May 17, 2025, at the Cedar Grove Personal Care Facility.

He was born at Rockport, WV, June 4, 1936, the son of the late Jack and Minnie Dorst Smith.

He had retired from AGA Gas Company after over 33 years of service and had worked in drywalling in the Wood County area his entire adult life. He was a wheeler and dealer and enjoyed trading vehicles and tractors. His favorite pastime was going out to eat with his wife and was a member of the New England Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children, Jeff Smith (Yvonne) of Washington, Mike Smith (Terry) of Washington, Tim Smith (Christina) of Belleville, Terri Hertz (Jimmy) of Washington and Jody Smith (Wendy) of Washington. His grandchildren, Josh, A.J., Katie, Tommy, Olivia, Anna, Emily, Natalie, Judd, Abby, Caroline and Brandy. His great grandchildren, Sophie, Dalton, Jaxon, Brody, Gracie and Violet. One sister, Nina Allman of Mineral Wells and a special sister in law, Betty Smith of Parkersburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years who he tenderly and faithfully cared for through her illness and passing, Grace S. Houck Smith. His siblings, Lena Thompson, Betty Skinner, Opal Gates, Everett Smith and Ireta McCoy and a great grandson, Brendan.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Reverend Frank Miller officiating. Burial will be in the New England Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
