It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lloyd Deming Cowell on May 15, 2025, in his hometown of Belpre, Ohio. He was born Oct. 10,1939, in Newark, Ohio, to George L. Cowell and Lois Breckenridge Cowell. Graduated Belpre High School 1957 and Marietta College 1961 with B.A. in Biology. In college, played basketball, rowed crew, and was a Lamda Chi Alpha. Lloyd proudly served his country from 1961-1965, for several years in the reserves, and was an honorably discharged Naval Lieutenant. Lloyd was a Nationwide Insurance agent for forty years, the Belpre office with his brother, George.
Together they operated Cowell Realty, developing Northlake subdivision and Oxbow Golf course and subdivision. Lloyd gathered and led the community group that brought the Little Hocking Water System to many rural households. Lloyd was a dedicated member of the Belpre Rotary, twice serving as President. He was a Mason, a Shriner, a member of the American Legion, and belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution. Lloyd was active in the Boy Scouts, for many years taking boys camping. Lloyd was a life-long history buff, a member of the Belpre Historical Society and the Western Washington County Historical Society. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, brother George and sister Sally. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sandra Spencer Cowell, three children, Caroline Cowell Segelken (John), Lloyd D. Cowell Jr. (Anne), and Christopher G. Cowell (Cheryl), six grandchildren Abigail Segelken, Jack Segelken (Joanna), Ethan Shay-Cowell, Aaron Shay- Cowell, Lucas Cowell, Dennis Cowell, and one great-grandchild, Noah Segelken. Friends may gather 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 22nd, at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre. Service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23rd, at First Presbyterian Church, Parkersburg, the Reverend Annie McMillan officiating. Burial Watertown, Ohio, Cemetery. Donations may be made to “building fund” First Presbyterian Church 1341 Juliana St, Parkersburg, WV 26101 where Lloyd was a long-time member and served as deacon and an elder.
