John Lorymer Bush, 94, passed away April 15, 2025, at the Wyngate Senior Living, in Parkersburg, WV. He was born December 23, 1930, in Bristol, England, son of the late Hanley H. and Ella (Gay) Bush.
After completion of his secondary education at Cotham School in Bristol, Bush was conscripted into the National Service where he trained as a pilot, flying Meteor jet planes.
Following his National Service, he obtained a master's degree in chemical engineering from Cambridge University, St John's College, where he also excelled in sports such as rowing and rugby. After completion of his education, he came by ship to America and was first employed in Arvida, Quebec by the Aluminum Company of Canada (later known as Alcan Aluminum).
In 1955, when offered a position with E.I. DuPont De Nemours & Company, John Bush came to the United States where he served as a chemical engineer in Parkersburg, WV and Orange, TX providing technical support for polymer manufacturing and processing operations. He went on to serve as International Liaison for Dupont, ultimately achieving, for outstanding technical expertise and leadership, the position of Dupont Fellow, the highest technical professional level in the company. He retired from DuPont in 1992 after 37 years of service.
He became a proud US citizen in 1982.
In retirement, John Bush spent time in Mexico, Costa Rica and Spain where he studied the language and culture. He served as director and tutor with Literacy Volunteers and was an avid reader and bridge player. He enjoyed daily hikes at the McDonough Wildlife Sanctuary. Above all, he valued time spent with his loving family.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Annette Flood Bush, son David Lorymer Bush, sisters Aline Kendrick and Sylvia Pile and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Peasley Bush, daughters Jennifer Goldsberry (Roy), of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Julie Jackson (Mark) of Westerville, Ohio, Diane Nastase (David) of Leesburg, Virginia and stepdaughter, Kathryn Hopkins Ruley (Matthew) of Huntington, WV, 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Leavitt Funeral Home, 403 7th St., Parkersburg, WV.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 pm, prior to the Memorial Service.
