Barbara Ann Ansel Carl died on Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Belmont, Pleasants County, WV.
The daughter of William H. Ansel, Jr. and Helen Catherine Kauffman Ansel, Barbara was born on March 28, 1937, in Springfield, Hampshire County, WV.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Dr. Harold C. Carl, II, her parents, and a sister, Connie J. Keaton, and brother-in-law, Ralph C. Keaton.
Barbara is survived by her three children, H. Charles Carl, III (Lisa), of Romney, Helen Catherine Wells (G. Michael), of Belmont, and Lori Ann Barnhart (Mark), of St. Marys, along with eight grandchildren, Holly E. Dante (Ryan), Hannah Ansel Carl, Emily C. Carl, Catherine V. Hamilton (Eric), Andrew M. Wells, Trenton Carl Barnhart (Brooke), Grant M. Barnhart, and Derek S. Barnhart, and four great-grandchildren, Olivia and Natalie Dante, and Madalyn and Remington Hamilton. She is also survived by a sister, Vickie Jo Milleson (William), and nieces and nephews, Amy J. Haines, William C. Keaton, Julie A. Frazer, Jill C. Puffenbarger, and W. Joseph Milleson, Jr.
Barbara was an award-winning elementary school teacher, having taught in Jefferson, Hampshire, Tyler and Pleasants Counties, in WV, and Shenandoah County, VA, and was beloved by her students at every school. She spent her early youth in Springfield before moving with her family to Charleston, WV, when her father was serving as West Virginia State Treasurer. She graduated from Charleston High School in 1954 at 16 years of age, and from West Virginia University in 1958 with a BA degree in elementary education. She immediately began teaching and continued, with some interruptions to raise her three children until her retirement in 2000. Barbara was named Pleasants County Teacher of the Year in 1992, and her year-end class parties at her home were a student highlight of each school year.
Barbara always put family first and was most proud of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed watching all of them compete in athletics and rarely missed a game of any kind. She enjoyed reading, watching movies, playing golf, and was a good athlete. She also enjoyed watching sports in person and on television, especially golf when Tiger Woods was playing. Barbara also liked to deer hunt with her family in Springfield, and took several successful hunting trips out west. She loved to travel. She and Harold especially loved their cruises, trips out west with family, going to Myrtle Beach for several months each winter and for summer vacations. But mostly she loved spending time with her beloved family and grandchildren.
Barbara was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Friends will be received on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, from 3 to 6 p.m., with a funeral service immediately thereafter. A graveside service and interment will be at Springfield Hill Cemetery on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 12 p.m.
