Richard “Brad” Sellers
August 20, 1969 – January 9, 2025
With profound sadness and heartbreak, the family of Richard “Brad” Sellers, 55, of Roanoke, VA, announce he passed after a courageous, determined, and fearless fight with bile duct cancer on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born in Riverside, CA, a son of the late Larry D. Sellers and Marilyn A. Sellers of Belleville, WV. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend to many. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching sports. He was a proud graduate of Parkersburg South High School and Marshall University.
He began his career in law enforcement with the Wood County, WV, Sheriff’s Department in 1991, where he rose to the rank of Investigator/Detective. He joined the United States Marshals Service (USMS) in August of 1996, assigned to the Fort Wayne, Indiana, office. He transferred to the Southern District of West Virginia in May 2000, where he was promoted to Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal over enforcement operations in August of 2005. In 2011, he was selected as the Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Virginia, where he held such a position for the remainder of his career.
In 2023, Brad was recognized with the USMS Director’s Distinguished Service Award for his remarkable service, recognition for his ability to “lead from the front,” and his dedication to the Regional Fugitive Task Force. Under Brad’s guidance, along with his brothers in arms, the team conducted four successful fugitive operations and recovered 38 missing and endangered children in one year.
Brad was an accomplished senior-level Federal Law Enforcement Officer with over thirty years of experience, demonstrating exceptional leadership and a deep sense of duty to those around him. His drive and commitment to the well-being of his colleagues earned him the unwavering loyalty and respect of his peers.
Brad is survived by his wife, Angela K. Craig-Sellers, with whom he met when he was 19 years of age and was married for 31 years; two children, Brittany L. Sellers-Kase and her husband, Alexander C. Kase, of Fort Drum, NY, and Kendra L. Sellers-Noonkester of Roanoke, VA; and three grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Joliene, and Callen Kase.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, especially to Jennifer and Maryluz, for the care and support shown to Brad and his family.
Brad’s absence will be sorely missed by all who knew him, interacted with him, and relied on him as a mentor, friend, and leader. In following the wishes of Brad, there will not be a traditional wake or funeral. It was his wish that a celebration of life occur at a time set by his family in his remembrance.
In lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the U.S. Marshals Survivor Benefit Fund. To make a donation to the Fund, contributors should go to the website: https://usmarshalsfund.org/ and then to the right-hand corner (three lines).
