Paul Eugene McMullen, a lifelong resident of Parkersburg, WV, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on February 7, 1938, in the same town he would come to cherish and contribute to, Paul's life was one marked by hard work, dedication to his passions, and a deep love for his family and community. Paul was a man who took immense pride in his work. His career spanned over two and a half decades as a machine operator at Ames, where he was respected for his commitment and work ethic. Even after retirement, he was known for his physical strength and ability to outwork men half his age, a testament to his determination and vitality.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Somerville and her husband Steve; his brothers, Robert and his wife Sheryl, Dick and his wife Teresa, Ralph and his wife Kathy; and his sister, Janet Balderson and her husband Bill. Paul's legacy also lives on through his seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as the many nieces and nephews who he shared many memories and cups of coffee with.
Preceded in death by his parents Patrick and Bonnie Higgins McMullen, sisters Betty Shutts, Lucille Cornell, and Virginia Smith, infant sister Audrey, brother Gary. Also, son Patrick McMullen and mother of his children Joyce McMullen.
Paul's interests and hobbies were a mirror of his character full of life and dedication. A Christian by faith and a member of Camden Temple Church, he strummed his guitar with the Rainbow Gospel Singers, sharing his love for music and Jesus over the years. His passion for bowling saw him actively participating in leagues for over three decades, where he fostered friendships and honed his skill. Paul's joy for life was also evident in his love for mowing yards. With the arrival of each new season, he eagerly awaited the moment he could hop on his mower and take pride in a well-manicured lawn. Perhaps one of Paul's most endearing qualities was his admiration for Elvis Presley. His enthusiasm for the King of Rock ' n' Roll led him to attend numerous tribute concerts, and he even fashioned his own signature sideburns in homage to his musical idol. Those who knew Paul understood this was just another facet of his vibrant personality. Paul was a man who left a lasting impression on all he met. His warm smile and willingness to lend a helping hand or an opinion were characteristics that endeared him to friends and strangers alike. Paul's passion for life and his love for his family and friends shone through in everything he did.
Services will be Thursday 1:00 pm at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Jeff Byrd officiating.
Burial will follow at McMullen Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
