Joy Lee Alkire

Joy Lee Alkire, a beacon of unwavering faith and boundless love, entered into the Lord's eternal embrace on the 4th of July, 2024. Born on the 14th of May, 1953, in the lush landscapes of Honolulu, Hawaii, Joy's life was a testament to her name, bringing light and happiness to all who were blessed to cross her path. She departed from this earthly realm in the town of Parkersburg, West Virginia, after a courageous battle with a long-term illness.

Joy was the cherished wife of Darren Alkire, a partnership graced with love and devotion that stood as a shining example to all. She was a nurturing mother to Chrissy Watson (Matt), James Talarico (Cari), Michelle Ford, and JoLee Crawford (Joel). Her grandchildren -- Trinidy King, Alana Bringer, Waylon Crawford, Mason Talarico (Alize), Tristan Talarico, Colton Talarico, Christian Talarico, Hunter Jenkins, and Hannah Watson -- were the apples of her eye, each one a precious gift that filled her days with joy and purpose.

She was a beloved sister to Teresa Root, Anita Fisher (John), Roberta Lehosit, Lisa VanSlyke, Diane Lockhart, and Robert Fabiano. Joy was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven by her sisters Sarah Duckworth and Dawn (Cookie) Shears (Randy), who preceded her in death, leaving behind a legacy of love that will continue to thrive in the hearts of her numerous nieces and nephews.

Joy's journey through life was marked by her steadfast commitment to her faith and her community. A graduate of Shinnston High School, she dedicated her life to service as a pastor's wife, school secretary, counselor, singer, and decorator. Joy's roles as a mother and "Ganny" were performed with an unparalleled selflessness and tenderness that touched the lives of many.

Her interests were a reflection of her spirit; she reveled in the simple pleasures of spending time with her family, friends, and the Lord. Joy found joy in yard sales, meticulously planning events, attending church, and extending a helping hand to anyone in need. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of faith, love, and selflessness.

The words that best describe Joy are faith-filled, selfless, and loving. She lived by the words of the Apostle Paul, "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13). Joy embodied this scripture, demonstrating through her actions that love is indeed the greatest gift one can offer the world.

Her voice, a sweet and melodic testament to her love for singing, will resonate in the memories of those who heard her. Her hands, always busy decorating, planning, and caring, were instruments of her creative spirit and generous heart. Joy's presence was a sanctuary to many, a place where counsel was wise, and comfort was freely given.

As we gather to honor the life of Joy Lee Alkire, let us remember the light she shone upon us. In moments of silence, let us feel her warmth; in times of laughter, let us hear her echo; and in acts of kindness, let us carry on her legacy. Though her physical presence is no longer among us, her spirit continues to guide and inspire.

We give thanks for the life of Joy, a treasured soul whose journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to her faith and an immeasurable capacity to love. As she now rests in the arms of our Savior, may we find solace in the knowledge that her life was a reflection of the divine, and her memory will forever be a blessing to us all.

Farewell, dear Joy. Your journey on this earth was a hymn of love, and your memory will forever be a melody of grace in our hearts. Amen.
