Carl Paul Bryant of St. Marys, WV passed away on February 10, 2024.Carl was born in Davis, WV on June 30, 1941. He graduated from Mountaineer High School in Thomas, WV in 1959, where he served as President of the Honor Society, President of the Student Body, President of his Class and Captain of the football team, where was a standout running back and middle linebacker.
In 1959 he began his studies at WVU in Morgantown where he met his beautiful wife, Jocele, of Morgantown. They married on December 13, 1963 before reporting for duty with the Army at Fort Benning (GA). Carl was a member of the ROTC Scabbard and Blade Military Honorary and held the rank of Major while at WVU. In 1963, he was commissioned as an Army Field Artillery Officer. After a short tour at Fort Sill (OK), Carl was assigned to an Air Cavalry Helicopter Unit at Fort Benning. During his service, Carl was promoted to First Lieutenant and held the positions of Assistant Executive Officer in a field artillery unit and Adjutant in an air defense unit (a position usually held by a Major) and as Assistant Executive Officer. Carl was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service for his service from November 28, 1964 through June 1, 1965. Carl was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and worked at the WVU library, graduating in 1963 with a degree in English. In 1965, Carl and Jocele returned to Morgantown where Carl attended the WVU Law School, graduating in 1968 and Jocele earned her Masters Degree in Education and taught school. Carl was a lifelong avid fan of WVU football and basketball, as well as the New York Yankees. In 1968, they moved to St. Marys at the request of local businessmen and served as the elected County Prosecutor until 1984. Carl returned to the role in 2010 after being appointed and was elected by the voters in 2012, serving in that role through the end of his term in 2016. Carl also served the city of St. Marys as its City Attorney. In total, Carl served and protected the people of Pleasants County for 22 years. Carl was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church. Carl served as President of the Kiwanis Club, President of the Pleasants County Library Board and Chairman of the Pleasants County Democratic Party.
Carl and Jocele were the parents of Kristin Jocele Bryant (Reynoldsburg, OH) and Carl Paul Bryant, II (St. Marys, WV) and the grandparents of Carl Paul Bryant, III (St. Marys, WV) and Darien Anthony Bryant (Newark, NJ).
Carl was the youngest son of Anthony and Stella Zalatoris. His two brothers, Albert and Joseph, also graduated from WVU and served as artillery officers. Carl loved God, his wife and family, his church and country. Carl loved to vacation in multiple locations throughout the United States. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, oldest brother, his faithful companion "Callie" and his lovely beloved wife of 56 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 17, 2024, at St. Johns Catholic Church with Fr. Shinto Matthew officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Marys IOOF Cemetery with Military Rites. Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, WV.
