David Allen Fought, 74, of Washington, WV, passed away peacefully Jan. 12, 2024, surrounded by family and his faithful dog Holly by his side as he entered his eternal rest. He was born April 11, 1949, in Parkersburg, WV, the son of the late Harry J. Fought and Betty George Fought.
Dave was a 1967 graduate of Parkersburg High School, where he met his wife of 55 years, June Ann Beckett, during their high school Spring Break of 1967.
Dave served 6 years in the Army Reserves with Company C, 463rd Engineering Battalion- Construction in Parkersburg, WV.
He retired from SABIC after 43 years of service at the Woodmar Plant where he made numerous friends and great memories. He would often regale friends and family of stories and breakroom shenanigans that he and his co-workers would engage in, often blaming their seldom seen co-worker Harley Wells.
Dave was a devoted husband, proud father of Chris Fought (Michelle) of Vienna, WV and Robyn Thomson of Hamilton, VA and an even prouder Pappy of his granddaughters Aynsley Thomson and Brynnly Thomson, both of Hamilton, VA. He is also survived by his loving sisters Linda Church (Gerald) and Cherrie Cowan (Vernon) both of Parkersburg, WV as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law Lt. Colonel Todd D. Thomson, nephew Michael Pegg and sister-in-law's Jenny Belcastro and Joane Steele.
A natural athlete, he played softball for Borg Warner/GE Plastics on teams that won state tournaments and played in several national tournaments. After his softball days were through, he took up running and playing golf. On his days off work, and when he retired, he could be found either on the links or running 5k races or half marathons. Often times Dave's children, sister and nephews would join him on the route where he usually finished before them and would circle back and run to the finish line with them to give them encouragement. In any sport he participated in, he would give it his all, much like he did in his everyday life.
He was a passionate craftsman that enjoyed wood working and construction, building everything from furniture to houses. To get a handmade gift by Dave, you knew it was made with love. If a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker needed help with any construction project at their home, he was always there to help. He had a reputation and legacy of always helping others.
Dave built all three homes in which he, June Ann and their children lived. He took his love for building and was a contractor owning DA Fought Construction for many years building and remodeling houses, offices, building garages.
His love of helping and construction could also be seen at St. Francis Xavier Church in Parkersburg where he helped with many remodeling projects in both the church and rectory. He enjoyed attending mass and fellowshipping with other parishioners.
Dave and June Ann were 4-H leaders of the Washington 4-H Club and spent many hours with the youth of the community working on environmental programs through the West Virginia Youth Conservation Program. He also coached Little League Baseball and Girls Softball at Tri-C Fields even before Chris and Robyn were old enough to play, helping shape young lives and teach sportsmanship.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 19, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home Parkersburg with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Jan. 20th, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father John Rice officiating. Entombment will be at a later date at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
