Daniel Eugene Johnson, a former Glenville businessman and longtime resident of Gilmer County, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023 while surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long illness.
He was born at home July 12, 1949 in Long Reach, Pleasants County, West Virginia, to Samuel Kenneth and Helen Ice Johnson, who preceded him in death.
Dan is survived by his wife Patricia Merrill Johnson of 54 years, whom he married on April 19, 1969, while they were both students at Glenville State College. After earning their education degrees, they began their teaching careers in Ritchie County. Dan taught at Ellenboro and was later principal at Smithville. Following his teaching career, he was employed at Allen's Buick, Pontiac and GMC where he started his career in sales. It was there that he met many people who became lifelong friends.
In 1981, the opportunity arose for Dan to become the State Farm Insurance Agent in Glenville.
He served the people of Gilmer County for close to 30 years, being devoted to his policy holders, many of whom became family friends.
While in Ritchie County, Dan and Pat started their family. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Wellings and her husband Tom of Glenville and his son Mark Johnson and wife Cate of Morgantown.
Dan's enjoyment came from his grandchildren and the various adventures they shared. Grandchildren Bayley Frashure and husband Tyler of Morgantown, Ty Wellings and fiance Payton Bailey of Spencer, Deta Kolo-Johnson of Richmond, VA, Imelda Falo-Johnson and husband Natalino Asqueli Nunes of Morgantown, and Liko Johnson of Morgantown, will all cherish memories of their Papaw/Tua.
There are many "Papaw" stories that will continue to be told for many years to come.
Dan is also survived by his brother William "Bill" Johnson and wife Janet of Sistersville, brother-in-law James McMullen of Sistersville, several nieces and nephews and a host of special friends who will miss his love and friendship, as well as his quick wit.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Shreves and her husband Jim, his sister Nancy McMullen, and a nephew Brian Johnson.
Dan had an adventurous spirit and always enjoyed trying something new. He loved all things
airplanes, having had his pilot's license and enjoyed attending airshows with his son and grandson. He had a wide range of interests throughout his life, including running road races, getting his CDL license, learning to run heavy equipment, wood working, traveling, golfing, hunting in his "Taj Mahal and Snack Shack" and fishing in his newly built pond. There was never a dull moment for Dan.
Dan was a 1967 graduate of Sistersville High School and a 1971 graduate of Glenville State
College with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1974, Dan graduated from West Virginia University with a master's degree in education administration. He was a 40+ year member of Glenville First Baptist Church where he served in a variety of capacities including serving as a Deacon, Trustee, Financial Secretary, and most recently, Adult Sunday School teacher. He took this role very seriously, studying intently, knowing that leading people to Christ was of the utmost importance.

Funeral services will be conducted at Glenville First Baptist Church, 217 East Main St., Glenville,
WV on Thursday January 4, 2024 with Pastor John Putnam officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with the funeral service immediately following. Burial will be at Meadow Lane Cemetery in Glenville.
