Virginia Mae Hughes Florence passed away in her sleep at Elison Assisted Care, Marietta, Ohio, on Sunday, October 22. She was 94 years old, born April 9, 1929.
Virginia spent her early years in Wirt County, WV, and later Parkersburg. Her parents were Carl and Maude Harper Hughes. She married Richard Florence (deceased in 1983) in 1948. Sons Ron and Mark were born in 1950 and 1956, respectively. Both survive her. Virginia is also survived by her granddaughter Erin Wolfe (Patrick) and great grandchildren Parker and Presley Wolfe. Also, Ashley White and great grandsons Maverick and Camden Kelley.
Those who predeceased her include brothers Edward Hughes and Bill Hughes. Also, sisters Mary Hayes and Eleanor Kinchloe. Virginia also enjoyed a special ten-year relationship with Ken Thomas, who passed away approximately 5 years ago.
Virginia was a proud woman. Proud of the successes of her offspring, proud of overcoming the challenges of her upbringing, and proud of her success as an executive secretary at E. I. DuPont, Washington Works where she worked for over twenty years. She instilled that sense of pride and respect for others to her closest loved ones. And she was protective of those closest loved ones in spite of her own many challenges. She can rest peacefully now and gaze with affection on those she leaves behind.
Services for Virginia will be held Thursday, October 26, at 11am, at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, burial at Mt. Olivet to immediately follow. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, the 25th, from 6-8pm, and again an hour before the service on Thursday.
