Lola “Pauline” Smith

Lola "Pauline" Smith, 95, of the Comet Community, Ravenswood, departed this life on October 16, 2022, at Ravenswood Care Center.

She was born on May 25, 1927, in Sandyville, WV, a daughter of the late Harold David Somerville and Lola Inez Moore Somerville.

Pauline is survived by her daughters, Patricia "Pat" Martino, Rosemary (Randall K.) Curry, and Lola Mae Smith; son, George H. Smith, Jr.; grandchildren, Erika Nicole (Joe) Young, Gregory Keith (Christina) Curry, Alexander Scott Curry, Daniel Paul (Amber) Curry, Ben Warren (Caitlyn Mullins) Smith, and Sarah Engle Smith; great grandchildren, Austin Patrick Curry, Dylan Keith Curry, Leah Faith Curry, and Hope Danielle Curry; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George Henry Smith, Sr.; brothers and sisters, Paul Somerville, Helen Somerville, Gaynelle Davis, and Hiram Somerville; and son-in-law, James Patrick Martino.

Pauline attended Comet United Methodist Church when she was able. She had been a Sunday School Teacher and Secretary/Treasurer. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and housewife. Pauline was a 1945 graduate of Gilmore High School. Her ancestors were some of the earliest settlers of northern Jackson County.

Pauline was one of the founding members of the Happy Homemakers Club of the Hemlock Community. She was noted for her loom woven rugs in the 1960's and 1970's. She participated in the first Mountain State Arts and Crafts Fair where she displayed and sold her rugs.

In her later years, she compiled and published her father's historical writings of Jackson, Wood, and Wirt Counties. She had three volumes of his work printed and received a West Virginia History Hero Award in 2002 where she was honored at the State Legislature.

A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 10:00 am at Ravenswood Cemetery with Reverend Bud McVey and Reverend Danny McVey conducting the service.
