Avery D. "Shep" Sheppard, 89, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully Dec. 18, 2018 at his residence under the loving care of his family and Amedisys Hospice.
He was born on Feb. 6, 1929 in Elizabeth, W.Va., the son of the late Burley C. and Wanda McClung Sheppard.
Avery served in the US Army. He was a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Union Local 132 and worked at DuPont Washington Works and the with Blont Brothers Construction at DuPont. Avery enjoyed helping others, whether that was working on a piece of equipment or a car, even if that was along the roadside. In earlier years, he enjoyed camping with the family, but always enjoyed going for a drive and out to eat until recently. He was a hard worker and good provider to his family. Avery was a member of the Big Tygart United Methodist Church for well over fifty years and enjoyed assisting around the church with outside maintenance. He and his wife had been active with the Grace of God Food Pantry for many years showing their generosity to others.
Avery is survived by his wife of sixty-four years Wanda McClung Sheppard, two children Dave Sheppard (Mary) of Mineral Wells, Carol Hall (Tom) of Walker, five grandchildren Christy Cunningham (Dave) of Thomasville, NC, James Sheppard (Carmen) of Mineral Wells, Janey Hall of Morgantown, Beth Hall of Fairmont, Courtney Hall of Parkersburg, eight great grandchildren, sister Aleen Townsend of Palestine and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Milford Sheppard.
The family would like to thank Donna Mills for her care for Avery in the last few days of his life.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Leavitt Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Blanchard officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be 4 – 8 on Thursday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
