ST. MARYS - State Treasurer Larry Pack presented more than $33,000 in unclaimed funds to the Pleasants County Clerk and the Ritchie County Commission on Thursday afternoon.
"Returning unclaimed property is about putting money back where it belongs and making sure these dollars can benefit the communities they came from," Pack said. "We encourage every individual, business, and local government across West Virginia to check our database for money that may be waiting for them."
The unclaimed funds came from stale dated and miscellaneous payments. Stale dated payments that have not been cashed or deposited within a specific time frame, typically 6 months (180 days) from the date it was issued.
"We can do something special for the county with this money," Ritchie County Commissioner Kenny Church said. "We will find somewhere useful to put this money and it's going to contribute to having a great county."
"There are many possibilities where this money could go," Pleasants County Clerk Jody Davis said. "We have a lot of mini grants for individual groups, parks and recreation projects, and transportation. Many individuals are going to be helped with this."
Pack announced in early September that his office's Unclaimed Property Division returned more than $3.2 million to individuals, businesses and organizations across West Virginia during the month of August.
The State Treasurer's office has more than $527 million worth of listings in its database statewide. There are more than 11,000 unclaimed property listings worth more than $1 million in Pleasants County. In Ritchie County, there are more than 19,000 listings worth more than $3 million.
Since the start of fiscal year 2027, which began on July 1, 2026, the Treasurer's office has returned approximately $4.6 million in unclaimed funds.
