VIENNA - U.S. Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va. 2nd Dist. awarded $1 million in Community Project Funding to the city of Vienna and the Wood County Economic Development Authority for the remediation of the concrete at the former industrial side of Spencer's Landing on Wednesday.
"It's an incredible day for the city of Vienna," said Mayor Chad Emrick.
The Spencer's Landing project aims to add a multi-use venue to Spencer's Landing Park, with an ADA accessible playground, walking paths, restrooms, food truck hook ups, shelters and more.
Moore said these projects are what is important to communities and these spaces bring everyone together, to beautify the community and have spaces for kids to play at parks. He said through his work on the House Appropriation Committee, funds are able to be secured for projects throughout the second district.
Moore said he wanted to bring specific emphasis to Wood County to address infrastructure issues that can create limitations for the county and by interacting with communities and its leaders, he is able to understand the needs and the issues the communities are facing.
"These projects bring everyone together in the great cities and towns that we have in West Virginia," Moore said.
Emrick said this project will address a problem area the city has had for over a decade. The major area for the remediation in the Manville industrial side, Emrick said, across the street from Spencer's Landing park. He said the removal of the concrete and debris will allow the area to be a usable space within the city of Vienna, and enhance the work done at Spencer's Landing.
"We're putting these plans forward to be able to move on to greater things," Emrick said.
While the funds were presented to the city of Vienna, they will be awarded to Wood County Economic Development Authority (EDA). Wood County EDA through a contract with Vienna oversees the economic development work within the city according to Executive Director of Wood County EDA, Lidsey Piersol.
Piersol said that while the funds have been secured, timelines with federal dollars are always fluid. She said the necessary paperwork will be started this week and the environmental review and bid process will follow, and hopes the project will either be underway or completed within the next year.
