PARKERSBURG - A storm on Friday felled trees down in a number of areas in Wood and Wirt County, authorities said.
"It has been all over the place," a supervisor at the Wood County 911 Center said. "(Vienna and Elizabeth) have taken the majority of it. Many of the trees falling are taking power lines with them."
The trees were concentrated in the Vienna and Elizabeth areas, he said.
A map from Mon Power showed outages remained as of 4:15 p.m. Friday, including in north Parkersburg, North Hills and a cluster of around 350 customers without power near Elizabeth in the Newark area.
Meteorologist Dave Wawrin with the National Weather Service in Charleston said there was potential for strong to severe storms overnight from Friday into Saturday morning. The area got .38 inches of recorded rainfall.
"Current thinking is that it should stay to the west of Parkersburg," Wawrin said Friday afternoon. "There is potential for another round overnight (Friday into Saturday). These kinds of clusters of storms in a pattern like this are hard to predict."
A cold front will be moving through the area on Saturday which could bring a 50-60% possibility of rain and storms to the area.
"The severe potential will be off to the south (of Parkersburg)," Wawrin said.
The weather will bring a break from hot to more normal temperatures.
"That will break this heatwave we have been having," Wawrin said. "As we head into next week, it should be dry on Sunday and dry on Monday and into Wednesday, in theory right now."
