Marietta College hosts AmeriCorps 9/11 day event

MARIETTA - Marietta College hosted an AmeriCops Vista event where students, faculty and community members could sign cards thanking veterans, first responders, and active military members for their service on Friday afternoon. This was in conjunction with creating "care packages" full of supplies for community members experiencing homelessness. This event was part of AmeriCoprs 9/11 Day projects and worked with the Noon Rotary Club to put together bags.
Cale McCutcheon, community engagement coordinator for AmeriCorps Vista at Marietta College, said he wanted to connect with the community and provide care to individuals that they may not have gotten otherwise. He said the thank you cards were to show veterans, first responders, and active military that "their acts of service do not go unnoticed, and to let them know that they are cared for and appreciated."
McCutcheon said as a recent graduate of Marietta College, he wanted a way to give back to the community where he had spent the last four years. He said in his time with AmeriCorps he has be able to interface with with community in Marietta and Parkersburg in ways he hadn't before.
Lisa Blavos, executive secretary for the Noon Rotary Club of Marietta, said their goal is to facilitate community engagement by giving back to local areas. "When you see a community coming together as one, it always makes a difference," she said.
Blavos said that for a community to thrive it requires the work of everyone and hopes to encourage youth engagement through their partnership with Marietta College for this event.
"We try to support local nonprofit organizations and support the youth in our communities. So doing a project directly with the college was really important to us," she said, "it's important for the community to realize the more you put into it, the more you get back."
