Contributions exceed $100K in three local campaigns

Three candidates for the West Virginia Legislature from Wood and Pleasants counties have exceeded $100,000 in campaign contributions for the year so far, according to the second quarter campaign financial reports filed with the secretary of state.

Second quarter reports cover the period from April 27 to June 30 and were due July 7.

In the 3rd Senatorial District, Republican Incumbent Republican Mike Azinger defeated Delegate Bob Fehrenbacher for the party’s nomination. Democrat Caci Petrehn ran unopposed.

Fehrenbacher reported year-to-date contributions of $130,279 and expenditures of $157,022.

For the reporting period, Fehrenbacher reported contributions of $4,960 of $100 each from Richard Wiggins, Marie Prezioso, James Crews, Margaret Gnegy, Kyle Pierson and Michael Tucker, $250 each from Richard Schaffer and Sean Smith, $260 from Conrad Baston of Morgantown, $300 from Elizabeth Fanta of Vienna, $500 from the Marathon Petroleum Oil Co. Employees PAC, Carl Martin of Buckhannon and $2,800 from the West Virginia Health Care PAC.

Fehrenbacher also reported a $40,000 loan to his campaign from himself.

Azinger reported year-to-date contributions of $73,228 and expenditures of $60,151. He reported contributions for the period of $7,750 of $500 from West Virginians for Coal, $1,000 each from David Azinger of Vienna, Elizabeth Adams of Parkersburg, Richard Verheij of Riviera Beach, Fla., West Virginia Optometric Physicians PAC and CRNA PAC of Columbus, Ga., and Christopher Ruddy of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Petrehn reported year-to-date contributions of $1,686 and expenditures of $1,067. For the reporting period, Petrehn listed contributions of $206 of $1.61 from Thurmond Hammonds, $20 from Autumn Parker-Bender, $35 from Eric Caruthers, $40 from Nicole Kuch and $60 from Katherine McInnis.

District 3 comprises all of Pleasants, Wirt, and Wood counties and a portion of Roane County. No two senators can come from the same county in this district. Sen. Donna Boley, R-Pleasants, is retiring, creating the vacancy for the unexpired term.

For the unexpired term, Republican Trenton Barnhart, who defeated Jason Harshbarger, reported year-to-date contributions of $115,852 and expenditures of $111,139. Barnhart reported contributions in the reporting period of $17,750 of $50 each from Susan Riddle, Roger Wigal and Janet Wigal, $1,000 each from Monty Boyd of Louisville, Ky., Alliance Coal PAC, Randy Smith of Terra Alta, W.Va., Scott Cahill of Orlando, Fla., Daniel Craig of Clermont, Fla., the West Virginia Optometric Physicians PAC, Patrick Morrisey, The Chemours PAC and CRNA PAC, $1,500 from Justin Lilley of Washington, D.C., $2,800 from Dominion Energy PAC and Patrick Martin of Jane Lew, W.Va.

Harshbarger reported year-to-date contributions of $24,681 and expenses of $44,681.

No Democrats filed for the unexpired term.

In the 13th Delegate District, Republican Melissa McCrady defeated Delegate Scot Heckert, who reported year-to-date contributions of $124,955 and expenditures of $140,097.

For the reporting period, Heckert listed contributions of $20,542 of $100 each from Marie Prezioso, SWOS Inc. and Lewis Rexroad, $200 from Mark Cinalli, $250 each from Maribeth B. Anderson and the West Virginia Trucking Association, $400 from the United Mine Workers of America, $500 each from the International Union Painters and Allied Trades District 53 of Washington, D.C., Dan Marshall of Parkersburg, the West Virginia Health Leaders PAC of Charleston, George Dettinger of Charleston, the West Virginia Optometric PAC, the West Virginia Troopers Association, OMEGA PAC of Charleston, West Virginia AFL-CIO, Douglas White of Archibald, La., and Enterprise Holdings of St. Louis, $600 from the West Virginia BankPac of Charleston, $942 from Chris Miller of Huntington, $1,000 each from Cheryl's Country Diner in Parkersburg, The Chemours PAC of Washington, D.C., Core Natural Resources Inc. of Washington, D.C., Douglas Skaff of South Charleston, $1,500 from the West Virginia Health Care PAC of South Charleston and the West Virginia LawPac of Charleston, $2,800 each from the Larry Pack Investment Account of Charleston and MemorialHealth PAC of Marietta.

McCrady reported year-to-date contributions of $35,687 and expenditures of $28,481. She reported contributions of $212 for the reporting period of $50 from Rick Modesitt and $162 from Jason McCrady.

Democrat Marley Umensetter, who ran unopposed in the 13th District, reported year-to-date contributions of $3,708 and expenditures of $2,010. For the reporting period, Umensetter reported contributions of $1,596 of $1 each from Darrel Jones and Craig Thurmond, $1.62 from Thurmond Hammonds, $2.94 from Thama Brentano, $5 from Saraya Mullins, $10 each from Jo Defibaugh and Martha Lamp, $15 from Marley Umensetter, $25 from Amy Burns, $20 each from Francis Coyne-Davis, Jamie Cutlip, Lisa Moore, Lori Fils and Daniel Miller, $50 each from Stephen Peck and Maureen Williams, $75 from Kendra Griffith, $200 from Mandie Mitchell, $250 from Zachary Kress, $300 from Doug Mitchell and $500 from the West Virginia Realtors PAC.

In the 10th Delegate District. Incumbent Republican Bill Anderson, who lost by three votes in the May primary election, reported no contributions or expenditures for the period and year-to-date contributions of $45,891 and expenditures of $627.

Anderson lost to Justin Beanard, who reported no contributions or expenditures for the period and year-to-date contributions of $525 and expenditures of $503.

Democrat Chris Jones, unopposed, reported contributions of $252 from $100 to $1 from Darrell Jones, Craig Thurmond, Neal Wilson, Jan Pickering and Janice Fenton. He reported year-to-date contributions of $813 and expenditures of $618.

In the District 11 Republican primary, Jeff Sandy, a former state Homeland Security secretary, reported contributions year-to-date of $30,123 and expenditures of $27,536. For the period, he reported contributions of $500 from the West Virginia AFL-CIO.

Sandy defeated Andy Borkowski, president of Parkersburg City Council. Borkowski reported year-to-date contributions of $6,705 and expenditures of $10,383. He reported $51 in contributions for the reporting period from Chris Murray.

Democrat Daniel Miller, who ran unopposed for the party nomination in the 11th District, reported contributions of $933 for the reporting period of 3 cents from the West Virginia Central Federal Credit Union, $1 each from Darrell Jones and Craig Thurmond, $70 from Consuelo Moreno, $1.62 from Thurmond Hammonds, $15 from Jeff Fox, $20 from Judith Peascoe and $100 each from Jan Pickering, Marley Umensetter, Kim VanRijn and Lisa Hutzler and $500 from himself.

Miller reported year-to-date contributions of $1,502 and expenditures of $1,006.

In the 12th District, incumbent Republican Delegate Vernon Criss, chairman of the House Finance Committee, was defeated by Charles Hartzog.

Criss reported year-to-date contributions of $72,750 and expenditures of $72,749. He reported no contributions for the period.

Hartzog reported year-to-date contributions of $11,309 and expenditures of $7,565. He reported no contributions for the reporting period.

Democrat Dennis Rempel, who ran unopposed for the District 12 nomination, listed contributions of $3,824 for the reporting period of $24.24 total from Francis Stewart, Dennis Greenia, Darrel Jones, Craig Thurmond, Thama Brentano and Thurmond Hammonds. $1,000 from the Ironworkers Local 787 in Parkersburg and $2,800 from the Parkersburg-Marietta Building and Construction Trades Council.

Rempel reported year-to-date contributions of $4,167 and expenditures of $930.

Six candidates ran for the Democratic and Republican party nominations in the 14th Delegate District, Democrats Jim Marion, Crystal Butcher and Jonathan White and Republicans Dave Foggin, Angie Adams and Andy Daniel.

Foggin, incumbent, reported no contributions or expenditures for the year-to-date and no contributions and expenditures for the reporting period. Foggin won the nomination for another term.

Adams reported year-to-date contributions of $7,924 and expenditures of $5,942. She reported contributions for the reporting period of $185 from herself.

Daniel reported contributions year-to-date of $38,206 and expenditures of $37,831. For the reporting period he listed contributions of $2,350 of $100 from Charles Little, $250 from the West Virginians for Manufacturing Jobs PAC and $2,000 from the West Virginia realtors PAC.

Butcher, who won the nomination, reported year-to-date contributions of $530 and expenditures of $2,891. She reported $20 contributions for the reporting period from George Rodriguez.

Marion and White reported no contributions or expenditures for the year-to-date and no contributions and expenditures for the reporting period.
