Investigation beginning into shooting involving Parkersburg police, Wood County deputies
PARKERSBURG – A unit from the West Virginia State Police will begin the probe into a fatal shooting Saturday night in Parkersburg involving police officers and deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, an official said.
A crime scene team was headed to Parkersburg on Sunday to begin its investigation into the shooting at 3408 25th St., State Police dispatcher A.J. Taylor in Charleston said Sunday.
Few new details were available Sunday, after one person was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police and deputies and another body was found at the scene.
The second individual is believed to have been dead prior to officers’ initial contact with the first person, according to a release from the Parkersburg Police Department that also was posted on the Wood County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
Police officers responded at approximately 9:48 p.m. to an apartment at 3408 25th St. for an unknown problem, according to the release and a State Police dispatcher.
Officers made contact with an individual inside the residence who began firing rounds at them, the release said. Deputies responded to assist and deployed the sheriff’s office’s armored vehicle.
The subject continued to exchange fire with officers and deputies and was ultimately fatally wounded, the release said.
Law enforcement personnel then entered the apartment and found a second deceased individual, the release said.
“At this time, investigators believe that individual was deceased prior to officers’ initial contact with the armed subject,” the release said.
Additional information about the deceased individuals, including their age and gender, was not included in the release.
The West Virginia State Police has assumed responsibility for investigation of the incident, the release said. Per protocol, one deputy sheriff and one police officer have been placed on administrative duty pending completion of the internal review.
Additional questions were directed to the State Police.
