RAVENSWOOD – Motorists will have to take turns crossing the William S. Ritchie Jr. Bridge to and from Ravenswood over the next year-and-a-half. A project to replace the bridge’s steel grid central span with a lightweight concrete deck is scheduled to get underway Monday, according to the West Virginia Department of Transportation. Triton Construction Inc. was awarded the $11,265,000 contract in December. The remaining spans on the 2,710-foot bridge, built in 1981, will receive a concrete overlay, according to a release from the state Department of Transportation. The bridge carries U.S. 33 across the Ohio River in Ravenswood. Contractors plan to work on the bridge one lane at a time, with temporary traffic signals set up at each end. The release from the DOT says the work is expected to last through November 2027. A separate announcement from the Division of Highways, District 3, said the single-lane closure would last until 2028. The announcement notes inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances could alter the schedule. Motorists traveling through the work zone are asked to reduce their speed and exercise caution.
