Broken water line leads to Lubeck school dismissal

LUBECK – Lubeck Elementary was closed early Thursday after a water line break caused students to be sent home.

Kaleb Lawrence, assistant superintendent of operations for Wood County Schools, said crew members from Hope Gas inadvertently hit the wrong line while doing routine maintenance work after the line was marked wrong on plans.

“It was an accident,” he said.

Lawrence said water was shut off to the entire building while crews worked to fix the issue. Although Lubeck Elementary has two lines of water flowing into the school, water only would have been supplied to half the building, Lawrence said. After speaking to the crew from Hope Gas about repair times, the district made the decision to release students for the day.

“It would have taken one to two hours to fix the line, then they would have had to flush the line, and then there would have been a boil advisory,” Lawrence said. “We decided it was just safer to send students home for the day.”

Lawrence said Thursday afternoon the water line had been fixed and all issues were resolved.

“We’ll be back to our full, regular schedule (today),” Lawrence said.
