RIPLEY — A Ripley man will be spending years in prison for his role in the death of an infant.

John Tames, 24, of Ripley was sentenced Friday on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in the death of a 3-month-old child, named Everly, who died in January 2024.

He was sentenced by Jackson County Circuit Judge Lora Dyer to 40 years on the murder charge and 15 years to life on the child abuse resulting in death charge, according to a representative in the Jackson County Circuit Clerk’s Office. Both charges are to be served consecutively, court personnel said.

Tames was given a credit of 762 days for time served.

The final sentencing order has not been finalized yet, court personnel said.

According to the criminal complaint, on or about Jan. 5 (2024) the Ripley Police Department, along with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, responded to reports of a 3-month-old infant who was unresponsive at 1189 Ocletree Road in Ripley.

The report said emergency workers were able to temporarily resuscitate the infant and transport her to Jackson General Hospital. It said she was transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for more advanced care. She was on life support for 30 days before she passed away.

Tames was the boyfriend of the infant’s mother, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported. The mother left Tames alone with the infant to go to the store and returned to find the infant unresponsive, they added.

Tames was initially arrested in January 2024 on a charge of child abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian causing serious bodily injury.

Law-enforcement reported Tames was the only person at home at the time. Through a series of interviews with Tames it was revealed that Baby Everly was slammed into the floor during the assault, officials said adding Tames put the infant back into her crib after the assault and waited for the mother to come home.

Officials with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department had described the case as “gruesome” and “horrifying.”
