VIENNA — Lt. Josh Cole has been selected as Vienna’s next police chief.

Cole will assume his new office following acknowledgement by Vienna City Council at its Feb. 26 meeting and be sworn in after the retirement of Chief Carl Powell in April, according to a release posted to the city’s Facebook page.

“Lt Cole has consistently exemplified integrity, accountability and forward-thinking leadership,” Mayor Chad Emrick said in the release. “I am confident that under his direction, the Vienna Police Department will continue to uphold the highest standards of public safety while strengthening its connection with the community.”

Cole was chosen following a process that included physical assessment, written exam, performance review and a board interview, the release said, adding he “rose to the top” from a pool of three fully qualified applicants.

Cole has served in various capacities in the department, with experience that includes supervision of patrol operations and the implementation of initiatives focused on crime prevention and community partnership, the release said.

“I am deeply honored by the opportunity to serve as Vienna’s next chief of police,” Cole said in the release. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, staff and community members to continue building trust, promoting safety, and serving with integrity.”

The release says that under Powell’s leadership, the department “enhanced officer training programs, strengthened regional partnerships and maintained Vienna’s reputation as one of the safest communities” in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Vienna,” Powell said in the release. “I am proud of the men and women of this department, and I am confident that Lt. Cole will lead with the same commitment to excellence and service.”
