President announces emergency declaration for West Virginia, other states

The president approved emergency declarations on Saturday for West Virginia and nine other states because of the winter storm.

The approval makes federal disaster assistance to the states to supplement response efforts because of the emergency conditions caused by the storm, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Saturday night. FEMA is authorized to coordinate all disaster relief including alleviating hardship and suffering and to help save lives, protect property, public health and safety and provide resources required to alleviate the impacts of the emergency, according to the agency.

FEMA is specifically authorized to identify, mobilize and provide, at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, under the public assistance program, will be provided at 75% federal funding, the agency said.

Timothy S. Pheil has been named the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal response operations in the affected area. Designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

“I have just approved emergency declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and West Virginia,” President Donald Trump said on a social media site. “We are working closely with FEMA, governors and state emergency management teams to ensure the safety of everyone. Stay safe and stay warm.”

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey issued the state of emergency for all 55 counties in the state on Friday.

“I want to thank President Donald Trump for approving the presidential emergency declaration for West Virginia. His continued support ensures our state has the flexibility and resources needed as we respond to this winter storm,” the governor said. “We are grateful for our strong partnership with his administration, and will continue working closely with our state and local teams to protect public safety and ensure communities have the support they need as conditions evolve.”
