JACKSON COUNTY — A Jackson County teacher has been terminated after being arrested, a release from the Jackson County School district said.
The release said the district is aware of the recent arrest and serious allegations involving former classroom teacher Emily Wise saying West Virginia Code states, “any employee subject to a fact-finding investigation involving conduct alleged to jeopardize the health, safety, or welfare of students must be immediately placed on suspension.”
The release said the mandated action was taken by the school system immediately upon becoming aware of the allegations. It said in accordance with state law, the West Virginia Department of Education’s licensure agency had been notified of the arrest and that all other mandatory reporting obligations have also been fulfilled.
The release said while such notices are difficult to share, providing the community with candid information is necessary to ensure transparency and prevent the spread of speculation. The district said in the release that the safety and well-being of students remain the primary focus of our schools and employees.
Jackson County Schools said in the release it is cooperating fully with the West Virginia State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office throughout the duration of the criminal process.
In Facebook posts regarding an unrelated case, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is being conducted by the State Police, who did not respond to a request for information by deadline Friday.
