VIENNA — Vienna City Council approved several resolutions during its regular meeting Thursday evening.
Council approved a resolution authorizing the donation of $5,000 in Opioid Settlement Funds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Parkersburg for after-school transportation.
The funds will be used to provide after-school transportation for students of Vienna Elementary, Neale Elementary, and Greenmont Elementary schools to the Boys and Girls Club facility.
Council approved a resolution amending the composition of the Vienna Police Department to provide for a 14th patrolman. The reason for the change is to permit the police chief to assign a dedicated officer as a school resource officer serving the three elementary schools in Vienna jointly.
The department already has an SRO serving at Jackson Middle School.
Finally, council approved a resolution authorizing the execution of a memorandum of understanding between the city and the Wood County Board of Education for a School Resources Officer for Vienna, Greenmont, and Neale elementary schools.
Prior to the passage of the resolutions, council recognized several people. Vienna Police Chief Carl Powell recognized several members of his department for their work on a 2024 murder case in which a suspect was arrested, later entered a guilty plea and received a life sentence.
Council also recognized Steve Black who is retiring after more than 26 years with the city of Vienna, many of those with the parks department.
Council recognized the Big Red Archery Club for its accomplishments and achievements. The team is independent of any of the county’s schools, with members from throughout the area.
The next regular Vienna City Council meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.
