GRANTSVILLE — A Calhoun County commissioner and teacher was arrested Friday and charged with sexual abuse.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Calhoun County Magistrate Court, Jacob Daniel McCumbers, 39, of Arnoldsburg, was charged with sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust after a forensic interview with a juvenile family member. The complaint said the youth disclosed incidents that occurred multiple times a week for eight or nine years and reported McCumbers threatened to hurt the child if anyone was told.

McCumbers was released on a $100,000 bond and is on home confinement, a magistrate court official said.

The Calhoun County Schools website lists McCumbers as a first-grade/science teacher at Arnoldsburg Elementary.

A statement from Calhoun County Schools Superintendent Michael Fitzwater said McCumbers “was immediately removed from the classroom when law enforcement initiated an investigation,” as required by state law.

The statement said “appropriate personnel action will continue to be taken” regarding McCumbers’ employment but personnel laws prevent the administration from making specific comments on the process.

“However, McCumbers is not in the classroom, and the West Virginia Department of Education has also been notified,” the statement said. “It is anticipated that the West Virginia Department of Education will also take appropriate steps, such as immediately suspending McCumbers’ teaching license given the pending criminal action.”
