ODNR inspector among six injured in orphan well explosion
NEW MATAMORAS — Six people were injured in the explosion that occurred Monday in Washington County.
Five of the injured were contract workers for Monroe Drilling Operations LLC. The sixth was an inspector with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR confirmed the inspector was admitted to the hospital following the incident and was released later that same day.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Wayne National Forest both confirmed that ODNR is the lead agency handling the investigation.
Public Information Officer Anthony Chenault said the site involved orphan oil and gas wells, which fall under the jurisdiction of the ODNR.
“Everything we’ve been told is that it’s ODNR’s responsibility, and we’ve directed all calls on this issue to them,” Chenault said.
A call seeking comment from Monroe Drilling Operations LLC has not yet been returned. ODNR did not have any additional information at press time.
