PARKERSBURG — The grand opening ceremony for the new Wood County Resiliency Center that was scheduled for today has been postponed.

The event was originally scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. today.

Wood County Commission President Blair Couch said the opening, which would have included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours and more will be delayed because of the inclement winter weather hitting the area, which has included heavy snowfall.

A new date has not been scheduled.

The building, which cost over $13 million, was funded through the American Recovery Act. It addresses issues the county had during the COVID-19 pandemic and will be able to handle other concerns as well as host large-scale events, such as legislative interim sessions and other statewide gatherings of elected officials and more.

During emergencies, the building can provide temporary shelter and food distribution. In the case of another pandemic event, they would be able to hold trials with social distancing measures at the building as the facility has two holding cells and a sally port to bring in defendants, as well as space that can be used for jury deliberations. There are drive-through lanes in the new maintenance department that could be used for vaccinations/flu shots, distributing personal protective equipment and more.

Officials have been looking forward to showing residents in the area the new center.

Starting at $2.99/week.
