PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg City Council President Mike Reynolds will announce committee assignments at the legislative body’s first regular meeting of the year on Tuesday.

Reynolds, the longest serving member of council, was elected president at the Jan. 7 organizational meeting on a 5-4 vote. It’s his second consecutive term as the council’s presiding officer and fifth overall.

Reynolds received votes from Councilmen Dave McCrady, Roger Brown and Andrew Borkowski, Councilwoman Wendy Tuck and himself, while Councilwoman Sharon Kuhl voted for herself, along with Councilmen Zak Huffman and Chris Rexroad and Councilwoman Cathy Dailey.

Brown was elected vice president 5-4, with votes from McCrady, Tuck, Reynolds, Borkowski and himself.

The council president assigns committee memberships and representatives on other boards and committees. Reynolds said there’s a bit of a difference doing it with a council with four new members as opposed to the same group as the previous year. But he noted two of the four newcomers – McCrady and Brown – have served as members before.

“We really only have two people coming on that don’t have previous council experience,” Reynolds said, referring to Huffman and Borkowski.

Reynolds said he is excited to work with the entire group, citing their different backgrounds.

“It’s going to be great to have all of their experience put to use for the city,” he said.

Reynolds said he plans to mix up the membership from where it’s been in the past. While he won’t announce the full set of appointments until Tuesday, he said he did not assign himself to any of the three major committees – Finance, Personnel and Public Works.

“I’m trying to leave all those slots available” for people to get experience, he said.

Council members can and often do attend meetings for committees of which they are not members, and Reynolds said he likely will do so for the three main committees.

There’s no legislation on Tuesday’s agenda, although the message from the executive will include nominations from Mayor Tom Joyce to reappoint Charlie Matthews, Amy Gonzales, John Reed, Eric Gumm, Bart Schumacher and Luke Peters to the Municipal Planning Commission. The nominations require council’s confirmation to take effect.
